AlertSF is San Francisco’s official emergency text alert system. It will send you official notifications about emergencies like earthquakes, fires, flooding, major power outages, and more. Staying informed during a disaster can save lives.

Additional emergency notifications

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)

WEA messages go directly to your cellphone. They are used to send out urgent warnings about specific geographic areas. WEAs look like text messages but are designed to get your attention with a unique sound and vibration repeated twice. No need to sign-up. Just verify that the appropriate settings are enabled on your phone to receive WEA messages (default setting is typically enabled, but specific considerations vary by device).

Emergency Alert System (EAS)

The EAS broadcasts emergency information directly to radio and television carriers. This system allows the President of the United States to address the nation during national emergencies and can also be used by the City of San Francisco to broadcast emergency information during significant emergencies. Tune into one of these stations.

  • Primary EAS: KCBS 740 AM and 106.9 FM
  • Secondary EAS: KQED 88.5 FM
  • Back-up radio: KALW 91.7 FM (while it is not an EAS station, the City and KALW have an agreement that allows the City to broadcast emergency information and updates, if needed).
  • TV Stations: KTVU TV-2, KRON TV-4, KPIX TV-5, KGO TV-7, KNTV-11 (NBC Bay Area)

Local news and radio stations can broadcast emergency updates and instructions when internet access may be limited.
